Brian Plamondon wins the 2013 Piping Hot Summer Drummer Snare score Writing Contest

Congratulations to Brian Plamondon for writing the winning snare score in the Piping Hot Summer Drummer Tune Writing Contest. Brian is a good drummer from Trail, British Columbia.

As you may remember, we held Tune Writing contests as part of the twentieth anniversary of Piping Hot Summer Drummer. The winning pipe tune was a 4/4 March written by Karen Campbell. Many excellent snare compositions were submitted.

The results were:

1st – Brian Plamondon

2nd – Amanda Colwell

3rd – Alec Robertson

Congratulations to these three excellent composers.

Karen Campbell and Brian Plamondon will both receive a full one-week tuition scholarship to Piping Hot Summer Drummer, 2013. Their pipe and snare compositions will be performed by the Piping Hot Summer Drummer Pipe Band at the Kamloops Highland Games on July 13, 2013. They will also be performed by the SFU Pipe Band and students at PHSD at SFU’s Vernon concert on Sunday, July 14, 2013.

Congratulations go to our two big winners, Karen and Brian. And, congratulations and thanks to well over 40 people who took a crack at composing these pipe and snare tunes. Your talents and creativity are greatly appreciated.

Karen Campbell Wins PHSD Tune Contest!

Our Piping Hot Summer Drummer tune writing deadline just passed and we have selected the winning tunes. This was a very, very fun and difficult job. There were a total of 37 compositions submitted, which was fantastic. Thank-you to all of you who sent in a tune. There were so many that were excellent, musical and fun to play and it took hours to decide on the final outcome. Our judging committee consisted of 8 professional pipers so the tunes were all thoroughly studied and played over multiple times.

Here are the results:

1st – 4/4 March written by Karen Campbell
2nd – 9/8 March written by Kevin Underwood
3rd – 3/4 March written by Kevin Underwood
4th – Hornpipe written by Brian Kelly
5th – Song written by J. Gordon Titsworth

Congratulations must be given to Karen Campbell. Karen is a good piper from right here in British Columbia and a regular at Piping Hot Summer Drummer. As you know, Karen’s prize includes a week’s scholarship to Piping Hot Summer Drummer. The SFU Pipe Band and PHSD students will be playing it in their Vernon, BC concert on Sunday, July 14th. Karen will be asked to play the solo that day. This tune will also form part of the March Medley played by the Piping Hot Summer Drummer grade 4 pipe band at the Kamloops Games on Saturday, July 13th.

I will get the pipes going this week, record the tune and put it on our website.

Drummers – it is now over to you. More details on your snare drum tune composition coming this week.

Thanks again to all of you who participated.

Regards,

Jack Lee

PHSD Grade 4 Pipe Band

To help celebrate the 20th anniversary of Piping Hot Summer Drummer we are doing a number of special things this year. We are assembling a pipe band to compete and perform at the Kamloops Highland Games on July 13, 2013. Kamloops is quite close to Silver Star Mountain and their highland games fall right between the 2 weeks of our summer school.

The Piping Hot Summer Drummer Grade 4 Pipe Band will be making its debut at the games and it will be a lot of fun for everyone involved. So….if you are at or near the Grade 4 level, not already playing in a pipe band at the Kamloops Highland Games this may be a great opportunity for you. Many of you will already be registered with other pipe bands and we don’t want to break any of the rules. The PHSD pipe band will be not be competing for trophies or prize money. This is for fun, opportunity and judge’s critique.

As the date gets closer we will be publishing the list of tunes, drum scores and other details. The music won’t be overly difficult and most of the tunes will be found in the PHSD music package for 2013. We are waiting for our Tune Writing Contest to close on March 31st and will finalize the tunes as quickly as we can after that date.

At this point we are just letting you know that we are assembling the Piping Hot Summer Drummer Grade 4 Pipe Band for the Kamloops Games. Please keep it in mind as you are making your summer plans.

Thanks
