PHSD INSTRUCTORS

Jack Lee - Jack Lee has been regarded as one of the world’s leading pipers for over 30 years. He has done it all as a solo competitor, teacher and as Pipe-Sergeant of the SFU Pipe Band. You name it and he has won it – Gold medals, Clasp, Former Winners Silver Stars, Bratach Gorms and the Glenfiddich Championships. Jack’s teaching style is inspirational and you can see it in the success of his many students and the ongoing strength of PHSD!

J. Reid Maxwell - Reid has developed an amazing record of accomplishments that stands him among the top in the pipe band world. In addition to his six Worlds and four World Drum Corps titles with SFU, Reid has won the titles with two other Grade 1 bands, one of them as lead drummer! He has also appeared in the final of the World Solo Drumming Championship on many occasions, and he teaches drummers and drum corps all across the world. His engaging teaching style captures students’ imaginations wherever he teaches, and especially at PHSD.

And more - We are excited to have current World Champion Pipe-Major Terry Lee back this year, and also the exceptional Donald Lindsay on the piping staff, as well as Stuart Liddel, the most successful piper of 2009. and D-M Jason Paguio leading the drum-major course. There isn’t a more dedicated team of people than the world-class players and dance instructors that Jack and Reid assemble for PHSD. Each year, some of the World’s best and most consistent solo and band competitors line up to teach classes at all levels, and the results are always great! Students are overwhelmingly enthusiastic about the quality of instruction they receive at PHSD!

CLASSES FOR PIPERS AND DRUMMERS

All participants receive six and a half hours of formal instruction each day. Structured according to skill level and interest, classes cover basic to advanced exercises, practice technique for solo players and bands, instrument maintenance and tuning, and discussion of everything from music theory and composition to dress and deportment. As always, the school has instructors on hand for the special needs and slower pace of beginners.

Advanced Piping & Drumming
We have a challenging program to meet the needs of Grade 1 amateur or new professional players on bagpipes or snare drum. PHSD offers an intensive, performance-oriented program that will refine your playing ability and build your knowledge. Be sure to indicate “advanced program” on the registration form.

Band Sessions
A portion of each day will be devoted to small-group or full-band critique, with an emphasis on band ensemble. Bands of all sizes and skill levels are encouraged to participate.

Evening Workshops – Special Pass for Non-Students
Formal classes end at 5:00 p.m., and we offer many terrific evening workshops to complement your daily studies. Evening classes include sessions for smallpipes, whistles, step-dancing, canntaireachd, Highland dance for pipe band musicians and great lectures and Q&A with some of the world’s best pipe band and solo musicians!

All evening sessions are open to friends and family, as well as registered students. All proceeds from these events and the ceilidh go to the PHSD scholarship fund.

Personal Instruction

While you’re here, you’ll get the chance to work one-on-one with instructors. PHSD provides opportunities for working on solo competition tunes and scores, learning new piobaireachds, or just getting advice on any aspect of your piping or drumming.

DRUM MAJOR INSTRUCTION

The drum major course runs for half of each day of the school [Week 1 only], and covers marching, dress, drill and flourishing techniques. The drum major course is half-tuition, or it can be blended with other classes for a full package.
